Automated Identification and Characterization of Landforms on Mars

My goal is to use my background in morphological image filtering to develop a method for automated identification and characterization of impact craters on Mars using photographs taken by orbiting satellites. Methods using elevation maps do already exist, but since they are of a considerable lower resolution they do not contain the many smaller craters that are visible in photographs.
